Alcohol, trance state and flu
Alcohol Trance state and flu
With a virus that has no known cure spreading, people are trying everything. An English teacher in the Chinese city Wuhan with the coronavirus claimed having cured himself of the disease with whisky, it’s also said that Chinese doctors used antiviral medicines for HIV patients on the heavy cases of people with coronavirus. We all know that we can use alcohol, bleach or soap to disinfect furnitures, clothes, but is one of humanity’s oldest beverages -alcohol a remedy or a villain for flus?
What the Englishman used was a sort of hot toddy by mixing two tablespoons of whisky with a tablespoon of honey, two teaspoons of lemon juice and a mugful of boiling water. We can find some scientific explanations that the ingredients in hot toddies really can help to alleviate sore throats and stuffy noses.
Lemon juice is a great source of vitamin C, which is helpful for the body fight off infection.
Honey mid full of antioxidants, minerals and oligo-elements that would strengthen your body, provide more vital energy to your cells, making you better prepared to fight off inflammation. Another essential ingredient in honey is the pollens that are great antihistamines to help relieve symptoms of sneezing and coughing!
Alcohol started to exist probably from natural fruit fermentation, for example, the marula fruit is known to get animals drunk). It may date back to the Neanderthals, or just in any species of Homo that live in areas where fruit was more likely to naturally ferment. Early humans use alcohol just like modern humans- either for the psychotropic effects (drunkenness), or nutritional benefits - alcohol is an indispensable ingredient in French recipes like Coq au vin, bœuf bourguignon, etc.
Drunkenness is similar to the trance state that shamanism would induce people into with plants, etc. In trance state, you can access the subconscious mind and reprogram your emotions, however you call it or get into it, by meditation, breathing, using herbs or alcohol, daydreaming or after sexual intercourse, or induced with crystal balls … Human beings adore so much this alternated state of mind that you can see in every market, whole shelves of all sorts of alcohol. Why are people so obsessed with alcohol? It’s because they don’t want to be sober and clear-minded all the time! Few people really seek « mens sana in corpore sano » all the time... Another point is that whiskey is an efficient pain killer, when you have the flu- be it human, avian or porcine, you’d mostly have a fever, which can be very painful.
Besides helping relieve the symptoms once you have it, both the normal flu and the coronavirus can be contagious before the carrier has any symptoms. Occasional consumption of alcohol may help kill or chase away the viruses also. However, as everything, balance is the key, heavy drinkers and chronic abuse of alcohol is known to increase the risk and severity of community acquired pneumonia. Chronic alcohol consumption and dependence may increase the risk for severe influenza virus infections by altering the pulmonary inflammatory environment.
So, be wise and be safe with or without alcohol!
